Traveling Internationally with TickTalk
TickTalk Wireless includes roaming in Canada and Mexico for up to 6 months when using a TickTalk Wireless SIM on supported networks.
If you are traveling to Canada or Mexico, you can typically continue using your existing TickTalk Wireless SIM card without purchasing a local SIM card.
If you are traveling to other countries, we recommend purchasing a local GSM SIM card and following the setup instructions below.
Step 1: Purchase a Local GSM SIM Card
Before traveling, purchase a SIM card from a local GSM carrier.
Your cellular plan should include:
- Talk
- Text
- Data
- VoLTE (Voice over LTE)
The following plan types are not compatible:
- Wearable plans
- Smartwatch plans
- DIGITS plans
- Tracking plans
- Tablet plans
Step 2: Install the New SIM Card
- Power off your TickTalk device.
- Insert the activated SIM card.
- Make sure the SIM cover is fully closed and secured.
Important
Keep your original U.S. SIM card in a safe place. You will need it when returning to the United States.
Step 3: Configure APN Settings
Most carriers will configure APN settings automatically.
If mobile data is not working:
- Obtain the APN settings from your carrier.
- On the watch, go to:
Settings > Edit APN
- Enter the APN information provided by your carrier.
- Save the settings.
Step 4: Update Your Child's Phone Number
Your international SIM card will be assigned a new phone number.
To update the number in the TickTalk App:
- Open the TickTalk App.
- Tap your child's profile icon.
- Select Edit.
- Update the phone number.
Communication While Traveling
To reduce international calling costs and improve reliability, we recommend using:
- FaceTalk Video Calling
- FaceTalk Voice Calling
- In-App Messaging
These features use data or Wi-Fi rather than traditional international voice calling.
Returning to the United States
When you return:
- Power off the watch.
- Reinstall your original U.S. SIM card.
- Reboot the watch.
- Update your child's phone number back to the original U.S. number if necessary.
If you experience any issues after returning to the United States, please contact TickTalk Support.
